Called to the Long Trail, 1/2 mile south of Montclair Glen Lodge for a report of a hiker with a fractured femur. Call came from a hiker who found a note at the Montclair Glen Lodge with information about the hiker, injury, and location. Team responded and placed a cast on the fractured leg. Patient was evacuated down the Forest City Trail. This response was unusual because we had accurate information on patient location and injury.

Called to an hiker with a back injury on the Long Trail,, 2/10s of a mile from the Alpine Trail intersection. Because there are two intersections with the Alpine Trail (one north of Camel's Hump and one to the south of Camel's Hump) this involved some guess work. Patient was found to be to the south. Due to the dispatch information teams went in on the Monroe trail. When the patient was located it was decided to evauate the patient down Wind Gap and out via the Forest City Trail down to the Huntington side of the mountain.

Responded to the Bamforth Ridge Trail (Long Trail) on Camels Hump for 5 hikers without flashlights at the Bamforth ridge Shelter. Hasty team went in with extra lights and discussed options (spending the night or hiking out in the darkness) with the hikers. They opted to hike out at night. Trails were very wet and muddy from recent rains.

July 16, 2009

Responded to the Bamforth Ridge Trail (Long Trail). A 14-year old hiker from New York fell on the Bamforth Ridge Trail injuring an ankle. Highly confusing and inconsistent messages from his group via cell phone concerned rescuers with the actual severity of the injury. WBRT reached the patient at the Bamforth Shelter at 22:19. He was evacuated to the trail head at 03:14 then transported to Fletcher Allen Health Care by Richmond Rescue.

Responded for mutual aid from Mad River Valley Ambulance Service at the Lincoln Gap Trail Head for a male patient with a knee injury at the Batell Lodge on the Long Trail. Patient was evacuated down the Batell Trail to Lincoln. Patient was transported to FAHC by Bristol Ambulance.

Called to assist MRVAS with a person who had fallen off a cliff near Moretown village, exact location unknown. Unable to call back to initial caller. It was later determined that the caller also had fallen at a different location. Patient #1 was located prior to our arrival and MRVAS went in to retrive her. Patient #2 was located right after our arrival. The area has several levels of cliffs and ledges and directions were not clear on what level the patient was on.

Called to Camels Hump to assist a female hiker with an ankle injury on the Monroe Trail below the snow line. There were several people with her and between them they had 1 flashlight and all were in shorts. The team met the patient around the Monroe-Dean trail intersection and the carryout went smoothly. It should be noted that the trails are currently closed for hiking until Memorial day.

Called to Camels Hump for an ankle injury on the Monroe Trail above the Alpine trail. Due to the holiday weekend there was little initial response. Called SMR and RBT, both of which also had limited response. Col Tech and UVWRT were able to field a team. While Teams 1 & 2 were hiking to the patient we were allerted that there was a second injury on the Burrows trail. GMC responded to that patient while Team 1 attended to the intial patient. Also called VSP and NCWT both teams started working on a response. Patient 2 was working her way out with asisstance from other hikers. Called and cancelled VSP and NCWT. Evacuated the initial patient on the stokes. During the evac UVWRT received a call for a search involving a lost hiker. After the evac they headed off to that call.

Responded with other agencies to a report of a gunshot wound on MEaker Road in Duxbury. Patient was hit in the arm and leg. Mad River Valley Ambulance used their rescue sled to bring the patient to the Dowsville Road where the patient was transferred to Waterbury Ambulance.

Called to evacuate a hunter from the woods who sustained numerousw injuries when he fell from his tree stand. The hunter was in the ground for approximately 2 hours before being located by friends who called for our response.

A 46 year-old female hiker slipped on wet rocks and suffered a fracture/dislocation of her lower left leg. The patient was unable to move from the water saturated location and laid in the water until WBRT arrived on scene. The patient was in extreme pain and Tim Burdick MD administered pain meds about ˝ way down yet the pain level continued to increase

June 22, 2007

A 24-year old female hiker from Waterbury slipped and sprained her left ankle at an approximate elevation of 2,320’ on Hunger Mountain. Her fiancé called Capital West to request a rescue as the hiker was unable to continue on her own. The initial tone was at 14:35. Hasty Team #1 reached the patient at 16:37. With help from Stowe Mountain Rescue and Colchester Technical Rescue, the patient was evacuated by Stokes Litter and reached the base of the trail at 18:22. She declined transport to the hospital and left by private car. 18 rescuers participated.

Report of a mountain biker with an injured ankle in the Grand Desert area in Putnam Forest. Team responded with WASI, stabalized the ankle, and evacuated the patient on the stokes. Patient was transported the the hospital via private vehicle.

Assisted Vt State Police SAR Team with the search for a 43 y.o. male reported missing from Williston on February 21. His car was located in the Little River area near the dam. The area had been hit with a heavy snow storm on March 2/3. Teams searched both sides of Little River including Ricker Mt and the CCC Camp Smith on the South plateau of the dam. The subject was located at 18:15 near the old trail going up to the former water tanks above Camp Smith.

September 18/19, 2005

A 32 y.o. male Went for a hike at 1700 from the North Duxbury Trailhead. After entering the woods looking for a hiking stick he headed up the mountain off the trail to avoind a group of loud hikers and became lost before he could relocate the Monroe Trail or parking area. He continued to wander uphill until instructed otherwise. We put two members on the trails (D. Cutler, T. Strasser) during overnight calling to him. He did not have adequate food or clothing. Subject emerged on his own on Marshall Road in Duxbury at 10:10 the next morning.

Appoximately 25 y.o. male hiker who took a significant fall about a 1/4 mile up the Cliff Trail above the Cliff House on Mt Mansfield. Pt sustained lower back and possible internal injuries. Stowe Mt Rescue provided medical care, WBRT assisted with the litter evacuation down to the Cliff House where he was loaded onto the gondola.

While participating in a SAR training exercise with the Civil Air Patrol on Mt Abraham in Warren, a member of the Search Dogs Northeast K-9 suffered an ACL and MCL injury, plus a tibia plateau fracture when she was caught between her dog and another with some hikers. Radio and cell phone communications were near 0.0 but Lincoln and Bristol Rescue squads were called via Vt State Police in Williston. The patient was placed on a stokes and transported down the Battell trail to Lincoln.

A hiker on the Hunger Mt trail called 911 to report a hiker with an ankle injury. The initial caller continued with their hike and there was no ability to talk to the patient for further information. Interviews with descending hikers provided additional information and that the patient was an older female and would require a number of people to evacuate her. The patient was found on a rock in the middle of the brook at the waterfalls (about 25 feet from the location of the call last week). The patient was evacuated with the stokes. There were a total of 23 rescuers for this call.

911 received a call for a 38 y.o. female hiker with a fractured ankle about 1 mile up the Hunger Mt Trail. The hiker was experienced and with her husband of 3 days she was well equiped. She was brought out on a stokes. There were a total of 22 rescuers.

A 911 call from two skiers who were tired and might not be able to reach the snowmobile trail parking at Little River. Vermont State Police Auxillary went in with snowmobiles from the parking lot and found the skiers at the first southbound junction on the Woodard Hill Road. The skiers were transported to the parking lot. Both men were tired and cold but otherwise uninjured.

A 911 call for an injured mt biker on the "Snow Brook Trail" near Waterbury Dam. There is no known trail by that name in the area but there is a Cotton Brook Trail at the other end of the reservoir. Stowe Hazardous Terrain went up that trail and located the patient. WBRT staged at Base 24 until the patient was located.
